The second edition of ETH Sofia turned the Balkans into Europe’s newest hotbed of academic research and blockchain wizardry. And let me tell you, it was quite the spectacle!
As Sofia once again transformed into the Balkan epicenter for builders, thinkers, and blockchain dreamers, ETH Sofia 2025 made one thing clear: the Balkans are about to become Europe’s Web3 goldmine. With founders, academics, regulators, sponsors, and developers all converging, the event was nothing short of a well-oiled machine aimed at educating, connecting, and driving blockchain progress to the next level. Who knew the future of Web3 would be discussed with such flair and flair? 😏
Having had the pleasure (and occasional migraine) of attending both the first and second editions of ETH Sofia, I’ve seen it grow from a local “let’s give it a shot” experiment into the region’s answer to the Davos of blockchain. What started as a fledgling movement now looks like a slick, structured operation where knowledge is exchanged with the precision of a Swiss watch (if Swiss watches were really into crypto).
Over two days, more than 550 participants from over 20 countries packed the venue, and I mean packed. We’re talking 80 speakers, 26 main stage sessions, and 12 side events scattered all over Sofia like a treasure map for crypto enthusiasts.
The agenda went beyond the usual “sit and listen” panels. There were workshops, open-stage talks, and academic presentations that brought students, researchers, and founders into spirited discussions about the next steps for blockchain. Who says academia can’t be fun? 😆
“By the community, for the community”
For the founder, Vlad Dramaliev, ETH Sofia has always been more than just a conference. He said:
“The vision has always been twofold: to bring the Bulgarian crypto community together and to educate newcomers about permissionless blockchain technology and topics like DeFi, privacy, Web3 security, trading automation, and regulation.”
And naturally, Dramaliev had a few words to say about the shining example of Balkan innovation:
“Conferences like ETH Sofia reflect the ecosystem. They’re meant to amplify the success of the projects we showcase.”
He also had some thoughts on regional collaboration:
“ETH Belgrade was a huge inspiration. We even talked about synchronizing Balkan crypto events, so they happen back-to-back. Easier said than done, but hey, we’re visionaries.”
The human side of moderation
Moderator Alexandra from Thrilld Labs confessed she didn’t always have the “gift of gab” when it came to public speaking. She said:
“I wasn’t always a public speaker. As a kid, I was painfully shy. But then I started bartending, became a founder, and voilà – I was suddenly a pro at keeping people entertained.”
Her secret? Preparation:
“I research every speaker, practice their names (it’s a struggle), and pay attention to what’s being covered on stage so I can make smooth transitions or throw in a cheeky joke. You know, to keep things lively.”
She also gave credit to the behind-the-scenes crew:
“The front of the stage is what everyone sees, but the real magic happens backstage. ETH Sofia’s team was truly epic.”
Her favorite sessions? “Nicolas Bacca from Ledger and ZKNox, and Khashim Arziyev from Binance. Smart, engaging, and totally accessible. Hard to do, but they nailed it.”
Uniting a fragmented region
Tina Petkova, the Event Manager of ETH Sofia, explained that the event’s mission was to unite the scattered Balkan Web3 ecosystem:
“Our goal was simple: bring developers, entrepreneurs, and researchers under one roof and make ETH Sofia feel like their event. By the community, for the community.”
“The biggest challenge? The community’s fragmentation. Talent is everywhere, but it’s scattered. We balanced newcomers with seasoned veterans, and that became one of our strengths.”
She added that continuity was key:
“If we can make ETH Sofia the annual event that connects the Balkan crypto community, then our job is done.”
Bitget’s commitment to the region
Among ETH Sofia’s key partners was Bitget, whose COO Vugar Usi Zade shared why these events are vital. He explained:
“We chose to sponsor ETH Sofia because it’s a crucial gathering for the Web3 community in Eastern Europe. Being part of this is essential for Bitget.”
He also pointed out that education is at the heart of Bitget’s mission:
“Providing top-tier services is only half the equation. The other half is education. ETH Sofia provides a platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange.”
He called the Balkans “an untapped powerhouse of Web3 talent and innovation, ready to make waves in Europe.”
Building the next generation of fintech
During his talk, titled Building the Next-Gen One-Stop Fintech Ecosystem, Usi Zade discussed the need for simplicity in today’s fragmented financial landscape:
“Users are hopping between platforms like it’s an Olympic sport. The market is ready for a truly integrated solution. We need one unified platform to rule them all.”
He added that this shift is inevitable:
“Specialized platforms are becoming a thing of the past. The next-gen unified exchange, like Bitget UEX, will eliminate unnecessary complexity.”
Comparing ETH Sofia to other Ethereum events, he pointed to the region’s boundless energy:
“ETH Sofia stood out because of the exceptionally engaged local community. The energy was palpable. This reflects the growing crypto adoption in Eastern Europe, making it an exciting place to be.”
A reflection of the region’s growth
What made ETH Sofia 2025 unique was its balance between theory and practice. Professors discussed blockchain economics while founders were building next-gen protocols right in front of our eyes. It was like watching the future unfold in real-time.
This combination of academic depth and entrepreneurial execution might just define the next chapter of Web3 in the Balkans. It’s no longer about whether the region can keep up with global innovation. It’s about how far it can lead it. Watch out, world! 🌍
