Well, well, well, it seems like nearly half of the good ol’ US of A has had their data compromised in just the first half of 2025, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC). Talk about a digital disaster! 🌪️
The ITRC reports a whopping 1,732 data breaches in the US during H1 2025, affecting a staggering 165,745,452 individuals. That’s more people than you can fit in a stadium, even if you tried to make it the world’s biggest stadium… and then doubled it. 🏟️
“Our analysis of the first six months of the year shows a landscape dominated by cyberattacks, with supply chain vulnerabilities still being a huge pain in the neck. While the number of breaches hasn’t skyrocketed compared to previous years, the impact on victims is still pretty darn severe.”
For context, the US population is currently around 342 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So, if you haven’t been hacked yet, congratulations! You’re one of the lucky few. 🍀
The ITRC also notes a rise in AI-powered phishing attacks, which are getting trickier to spot. And let’s not forget about the new threats to personal info, like the reintroduction of previously compromised data (PCD) into the mix. It’s like your old embarrassing photos resurfacing on social media, but way worse. 😬
“The use of stolen logins and passwords to gain access to critical systems for ransom attacks or data theft is becoming a bigger issue. For instance, an unsecured cloud environment was recently discovered with over 16 billion logins and passwords in one big, scary database. Yikes!”
