Vitalik Buterin suggests Ethereum should be developed as a key component within a broader network of technologies designed to offer privacy and security.
He explained that these tools are openly available and allow people to connect, work, and live in a way that’s strong and doesn’t easily fall apart under pressure.
Buterin’s Vision
Ethereum’s co-founder recently explained their vision for building secure, independent digital spaces. This aims to lessen the impact of conflicts, avoid reliance on systems that could be misused, and address growing worries about government overreach, surveillance, wars, and the increasing influence of large corporations. These concerns also include the declining quality of major tech platforms, the increasingly hostile environment on social media, and the challenges posed by the growing power of artificial intelligence.
Vitalik Buterin noted that many believe Ethereum hasn’t made a real difference in the lives of people struggling with issues the Ethereum community values – things like freedom, privacy, digital security, and the ability for communities to organize themselves.
He suggests using “sanctuary technologies” as a way to address the problem. Rather than trying to control existing systems, these tools would let people and organizations function independently, protected from external influence. He envisions Ethereum playing a role by offering a shared, open digital platform where individuals can collaborate and create resilient communities and economies.
He explained that this isn’t about completely rebuilding the world around blockchain technology. It won’t require all financial systems to run on blockchains, or all decision-making to happen through decentralized systems either.
Buterin explained the goal as “de-totalization” – essentially, minimizing the chance of any single entity gaining complete dominance in a global conflict, and also preventing total ruin for those who lose.
Ethereum’s Limitations
I was reading a post by Buterin recently, and he was talking about where Ethereum should focus its energy. While he definitely gets that financial freedom is a huge part of what we’re building with crypto, he pointed out it’s not a magic bullet. He basically said solving things like who holds the power, how much surveillance there is, and the growing divisions in society are way bigger than just fixing the financial system. It’s a good reminder that crypto is a tool, and we need to think about how it fits into the larger picture.
He explained that the network can’t solve all the world’s problems alone, and attempting to do so would mean concentrating too much power – something that goes against the idea of a community built on decentralization. He believes its true power is in creating lasting digital foundations, which he sees as the core of what he calls ‘sanctuary technologies.’
Ethereum’s co-founder highlighted technologies he believes empower individuals, such as Starlink internet, open-source AI models that run on personal devices, the Signal messaging app, and Community Notes on X (formerly Twitter).
He finished by urging everyone to work together and simplify things across all technology levels – from digital wallets and apps to the underlying operating systems and hardware. He emphasized focusing on people who truly need privacy-focused tools and collaborating with partners both within and outside the cryptocurrency world.
