Google Play Store’s Hilarious Blunder: Non-Custodial Wallets Are Here to Stay! 😂

Oh, what a kerfuffle! A tiny little hiccup in a Google Play Store policy update back in July sent the crypto world into a tizzy! Who knew a simple mistake could cause such a ruckus? 🤪

No Ban for Non-Custodial Wallets in the Google Play Store

In a rather peculiar twist, Google sheepishly admitted to accidentally banning all non-custodial crypto wallets from its beloved Play Store. But fear not, dear crypto enthusiasts! They’ve promised to fix their blunder and clarify that these wallets don’t need to be government-licensed banks or registered money services businesses (MSBs). Phew! 😅

(Google has assured us that non-custodial wallets are “not in scope” of their new policy. Who knew? 🤷‍♂️)

On July 10, 2025, the Google Play Store quietly updated its policy. But oh dear, they weren’t ready for the uproar that followed an article from The Rage that revealed a little wrinkle in the new policy. It would have required all crypto wallets in the Play Store across 15 jurisdictions to have government licensing and registration. Yikes! 😱

“Thanks for flagging this,” Google chirped in a response on X. “Non-custodial wallets are not in scope of Google Play’s Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Software Wallets Policy. We are updating the Help Center to make this clear.” Well, that’s a relief! 🙌

Now, custodial wallets are the ones that store cryptocurrency for their customers, like a digital piggy bank. These are usually run by exchanges that must register with the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCen) as MSBs. But some savvy customers prefer to keep their treasures close, using non-custodial wallets that let them store their private cryptographic keys on their own devices. Because, you know, who doesn’t want to be the captain of their own ship? 🏴‍☠️

However, until today, the new Google Play Store policy didn’t make this distinction. It required all “cryptocurrency exchanges and software wallets” in 15 listed jurisdictions, including the U.S., the UK, the EU, and Canada, to be licensed or registered by government regulators. Talk about a party pooper! 🎉🚫

“If your app is targeting any of the countries/regions listed below, you will be served location-specific forms to complete,” the policy ominously warned. “If you don’t have the required registration or licensing information for certain locations, remove them from your app’s targeting countries/regions.” Oh, the horror! 😳

This language sent crypto legal experts and privacy gurus into a frenzy, with some calling it “regulation by monopoly,” “insane,” and “a quiet coup on crypto.” The uproar was so loud it reached Google’s ears, and thankfully, the tech giant promised to revise the new policy, putting the controversy to bed. Sweet dreams, crypto friends! 😴✨
