The city, which seems to have mastered the art of balancing tradition and chaos, is now letting insurers take a leap of faith (or folly) into crypto and infrastructure. The Hong Kong Insurance Authority (IA), a bureaucratic force that probably still uses fax machines, has proposed a plan to let insurers invest directly in cryptocurrencies. Because nothing says “stability” like a 100% risk charge on crypto assets. But hey, at least they’re pegging stablecoins to fiat currency-because nothing’s more reassuring than trusting governments to print money. Public consultations will run from February to April, because nothing says “urgency” like a six-month delay.

Meanwhile, HashKey Holdings Ltd., Hong Kong’s answer to a crypto exchange, raised HK$1.6 billion in its IPO. The demand was so insatiable that investors gobbled up 80% of the shares-only for the stock to tank 3% on its debut. Because nothing says “confidence” like selling shares at a discount and then watching them crater. Still, JPMorgan and Guotai Haitong are on board, so it must be a safe bet. Probably.

And while we’re at it, the rest of the world is playing catch-up. Australia’s letting companies juggle stablecoins and wrapped tokens without separate licenses-because why not? And Argentina’s considering letting banks trade crypto. Manuel Ferrari of Bitcoin Argentina put it best: “If Santander starts offering Bitcoin, it’ll be like giving a loaded gun to a toddler. But hey, at least it’s a new wave!”
