X’s Crypto Starterpacks: Because Who Needs Friends When You Have Memecoins?

  • X, the social media behemoth with a penchant for drama, is rolling out “Starterpacks”-because apparently, finding Bitcoin bros and memecoin maniacs on your own is just too much work.
  • In a move that screams “we’re totally transparent, promise,” X open-sourced its recommendation algorithm on GitHub. Spoiler: it’s still a black box, but now it’s a black box with a GitHub link.
  • Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, admits that getting people to stick around is harder than explaining NFTs to your grandma. Turns out, interest-based graphs are less fun than they sound.

X, the platform where chaos reigns supreme, is launching a new feature called Starterpacks. Because, you know, manually finding accounts that scream “I’m into blockchain and existential dread” was just too quaint.

This genius tool will let newcomers instantly follow pre-curated lists of accounts, focusing on niche interests like Bitcoin, blockchain, and “unhinged personalities.” Finally, a one-stop shop for all your crypto and chaos needs.

The goal? To make X less of a labyrinth for beginners. Because spending months sifting through the noise to find the one sane voice in the crypto wilderness is so 2022.

Now, X is automating the discovery process, because who has time for organic exploration when you can just follow a list titled “People Who Yell About Bitcoin at 3 AM”?

Starterpacks: Because Curating Your Own Feed is for Suckers

Nikita Bier, the man with the unenviable task of making X less confusing, announced the tool on Wednesday. Apparently, his team spent months scouring the globe for “top posters.” Because nothing says “quality content” like a guy who tweets about Dogecoin while eating cereal.

They’ve already created over 1,000 packs, covering everything from economics to “software builders who probably need a hug.” Yes, there’s even a pack for “unhinged personalities.” Looking at you, Crypto Twitter.

Over the last few months, we scoured the world for the top posters in every niche & country. Spoiler: most of them were in their mom’s basement.

We’ve compiled them into Starterpacks, because who has time to find good accounts when you could be doomscrolling?

The Bitcoin and crypto community is a major focus, because nothing says “trustworthy” like a curated list of accounts that might or might not be run by bots. X wants to help new users skip the trial and error phase, which is code for “we don’t want you to realize how much noise is here.”

Bier admits that finding relevant accounts is a major pain point. Unlike other apps, you can’t just sync your contacts and call it a day. No, on X, you have to actually care about shared interests. What a drag.

Bitcoin Community: Now with 32% Less Enthusiasm!

This update comes at a time when engagement is about as lively as a Monday morning meeting. Cypherpunk Jameson Lopp dropped a bombshell: posts mentioning Bitcoin fell by 32% last year. Guess everyone finally realized it’s not going to make them millionaires overnight.

There were 96,000,000 posts on X containing the word “bitcoin” in 2025, a decrease of 32% year over year. H/T to everyone who finally got a life.

Bier insists the issue isn’t the algorithm-it’s the users. Apparently, we all need better ways to dive into our niche interests. Because clearly, the problem is that we’re not spending enough time on X.

Starterpacks are here to fix this “discovery gap.” Because when users stay in the mainstream timeline, they miss out on the “magic” of the app. By “magic,” we mean endless arguments about memecoins and Elon Musk’s latest tweet.

The real value, Bier claims, comes from specialized communities. By grouping the best posters, X hopes to boost retention and growth. Or, at the very least, keep people from fleeing to Bluesky.

Bluesky and Threads: The Cool Kids X Wants to Be

X isn’t exactly breaking new ground here. Bluesky launched its own version of curated lists in mid-2024, and Meta’s Threads followed suit. So, X is basically playing catch-up, but with more crypto and fewer filters.

Back in the day, X used to have editorially curated suggestions. But in 2010, they switched to algorithmic recommendations to avoid claims of bias. Now, Starterpacks feel like a throwback to the good old days, when humans still had a say in what we saw.

The “Crypto Founders” pack is already a who’s who of controversial figures. Changpeng Zhao, Vitalik Buterin, Brian Armstrong, and Justin Sun are all on the list. Because nothing says “credible” like a guy who’s been sued by the SEC.

Controversy: Because What’s a Curated List Without It?

Speaking of Justin Sun, his inclusion has raised some eyebrows. Critics worry these lists might promote “pump and dump” schemes. But hey, at least X is transparent about its algorithm now-it’s right there on GitHub, confusing everyone.

The code reveals that X uses a transformer model called Grok to rank posts. It looks at your likes, replies, and clicks to predict what you want to see. So, if you’ve ever wondered why your feed is a dumpster fire, now you know.
